Stitch by stitch

I write a lot about quilting and sewing because it’s a massive part of my life. Some people meditate to relax. I sew or cook or garden and as the weather moves me indoors, I move away from embroidery and towards quilting.

And yes, I know I can do it in a fraction of the time on a sewing machine and my dear friend Karen can make her machine do amazing things, but I like to sit snuggled under my quilt on a cool day and build my quilt stitch by stitch by careful stitch. My mind either wanders or goes into neutral as I focus on the pattern I’m building and then, if I’m really lucky, the ideas fairy will come to play in my mind.

So, this summer I sat and embroidered in the garden, and today I put the last touches to a very simple quilt top. After Christmas, I’ll make it come alive with quilting and then bind it with a dark purple. I know this sounds daft, but I’m going to be experimenting with quilting on fabric that isn’t white for a while. Not dark fabrics because that’s murder on the eyes, but the pale lilac and the pale blue and then go for lovely cables and interlocking hearts.

Do you craft? I was going to say are you crafty, but that comes out all wrong, doesn’t it? If so, I’d love to know what you do and why.

And today's picture is of my quilt top...
