…I get ideas from looking at local news, so finding this piece was a particular joy - https://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/news/24966526.search-worlds-first-tank-believed-buried-bovington/
Once, you see, long, long ago, I lived in Bovington for a couple of years, and volunteered with an oral history programme to record memories. It wasn’t the amazing museum that it is now back then, but my little brother loved it and I was fascinated by history. So I heard these rumours, but that was all they ever were. Now, a little piece of history may well be buried so of course I want to help to find it. And isn’t it the sort of thing that Peter Cunningham would jump at the chance to get involved with? Most of all, it’s about honouring and learning from the past so at least we make some different mistakes in the future.
It’s cold down here in Dorset at the moment, and I met a lovely lady from Ontario on my walk on Thursday who was explaining how much colder it is in Canada. They’ve had snow up to her waist this winter. We had flakes that melted after a few hours! Her husband’s family came from Dorset, as so many people’s did, because Newfoundland was a stop on the fishing trade during the Napoleonic era so it was a joy to chat, as it so often is, and gives me more ideas to play with.
The sun was shining on the water, the harbour swans were quite content and have given up trying to divebomb my daughter and there are daffodils and crocuses all over the garden. Most of all, the meteorological office say it is spring and the days are getting longer so, as I expect you can tell, my mood is improving. All I ever needed was some sunshine, so I hope you can have some too till we meet again.
Till then, here’s a picture of Harbourside in the sunshine. Yes, it was cold. Yes I was wrapped up like an Egyptian mummy and most of all, yes I loved every second of it! So have a happy week, please.
