Welcome to the world of MI27. Its agents prefer to call themselves the Shadows because their job is to make it seem that nothing strange ever happens, so no one notices when drug and trafficking rings are literally destroyed. There definitely aren’t any cults that are trying to destroy the world either. Nor are there as many terrorist attacks, and there are definitely no public figures who need to be saved from the consequences of their naivete and stupidity. Sometimes people from outside their world get caught up in their operations and find that they’re capable of things that they never imagined they could be and definitely didn’t want to. They also realise that the world is a far stranger and more dangerous place than they imagined it could be, and if they’re lucky, then they get to live happily ever after.

ESTHER AND THE PROFESSOR COSY WORLD WAR TWO MYSTERIES

World War 2 changed everything for wife and mother Esther Graham, or Mrs Robert Graham as she’s known to the world, although she’s always very much Esther on the inside even though she’s bound by the rigid social conventions of the times. She married well, even if Robert did have an affair that left her being blackmailed and him with a daughter he doesn’t know about. More unusually, she worked at the Bureau for InterServices Cooperation in the military zone of Parkstone on Sea (which is now Sandbanks.) Back then, Poole, which is a lovely town on the Dorset coast, was number three on the list of places that were most likely to be invaded, so of course the government decided to put top secret organisations and evacuees there. (Sadly, this, like all the incidents I write about, is absolutely true.This makes it pretty much inevitable that she and her boss, the enigmatic tuberculosis survivor Professor James Lomax, would have found trouble as they volunteer to drive the Women’s Voluntary Services canteen van two evenings a week. On top of that, his cousin, Kit Carmichael, is professional Army, a bomb disposal officer and a strange kind of spy who needs contacts in the community who can notice what people are trying to hide.
As Esther fights her own war, she learns things about herself and her husband that she never expected to, and is horrified that she’s actually happier than she was before the War.
